NDHI Stakeholders Round table 2024: CliniquePlus and the Future of Digital Health in Nigeria
Recently, CliniquePlus was recognized as an authority in EMR software in Nigeria by the Nigeria Digital Health Initiative (NDHI). We were honored to be invited to a roundtable discussion where we shared ideas and strategies on how to advance EMR adoption in Nigeria. It was a proud moment to contribute to the national conversation on the future of healthcare, especially as the Ministry of Health champions digital health solutions that align with international standards.
In 2017, as a fresh electrical and computer engineering graduate, my experience serving in a military hospital was a turning point. It was there that I witnessed the challenges that healthcare professionals face daily—challenges that could be alleviated with the right technological solutions. That experience inspired me to begin developing CliniquePlus EMR, a software designed to streamline hospital processes and workflows.
Over the years, we’ve worked hard to address the unique needs of our clients, from small clinics to larger healthcare providers. As we expanded and began to work with clinics operating multiple branches, a new challenge emerged—the need for uniformity of data across locations. Our exploration into solving this problem led us to discover that global standards like HL7, ICD, SNOMED CT, LOINC, and FHIR had already been developed to ensure seamless data exchange and consistency across healthcare systems.
We immediately began implementing these standards into CliniquePlus. This shift has enabled us to provide more robust, interoperable, and future-ready solutions for our clients. With these standards in place, our software not only ensures smooth operations within a clinic but also facilitates the secure and consistent sharing of data between healthcare providers, enhancing patient care.
In an exciting development, the World Bank is partnering with the Nigerian government to support the establishment of a national repository of digital healthcare data, which will enhance the digital health infrastructure in Nigeria. This collaboration signifies the country’s commitment to advancing healthcare through technology, and it further reinforces the need for compliant, standardized EMR solutions across all healthcare facilities.
Now is the perfect time for healthcare providers in Nigeria to take their digital transformation seriously. As digital health becomes more prominent, it’s essential to implement not just any EMR solution, but an EMR that complies with the Nigerian Digital Health Initiative and meets the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR).
